WINDOWS TIP - Save Files to Your PRIVATE or PUBLIC Network Folder

What is a Private Network Folder?
It's the part of the network where you may save files.
Why should I save files there?

  • The files are available even if your computer is stolen, the hard drive crashes, or your computer doesn't work.
  • Network files are backed up.
  • Work files, such as your Excel files, should be stored in your Private folder.
How do I get to my Private Network folder?

  • In Microsoft programs, menu: File, Save As...
  • Click link to My Computer

  • Double-click username$ on (U:)

  • Double-click Private or Public

  • Type the filename, click Save in the dialog box

What is the difference between PRIVATE and PUBLIC?

  • Anything you save in the PUBLIC folder may be opened by anyone on logged into the Etown network. Files saved in PRIVATE can be opened only by you.
There's lots of white space around PUBLIC & PRIVATE. Can I save files there?

  • NO. Don't save files there. Only save them INSIDE the PUBLIC or PRIVATE folder.
