VIRUS CHECKER
Is my virus checker up to date?

To be safe from the predicted computer virus outbreak, Elizabethtown College employees and students should have the newest antivirus program from Symantec and the latest virus definition that our college supplies.

  • How do you know what version and definition update you have?
  • And what do you do if you need to update?

Here's how:

Click the START button

Select Programs
Point on Symantec Client Security

Click Symantec AntiVirus

When the program opens,
the version and definition date will appear

Program versions
Program: Should be 10 something

Virus Definition File
Version:
Should be 2/19/2006 or a more recent date

If you don't have Program version 10
you must get the most recent version.

Using your web browser, go to the college update site
http://update.etown.edu

Select Symantec AntiVirus

Select Faculty/Staff Downloads (if you're that type of person! Otherwise choose Student.)

The warning example, which appears below, applies only to virus checker programs NOT supplied by our college, for instance: AVG, MacAffee or a Norton/Symantec product you bought personally and installed.

If you have program version 9, version 10 will replace the old one seamlessly.
If you have version 8 or 7, go ahead and try to install 10. If you have problems installing over 8 or 7,
un-install the older version first, then install version 10.

Click Install Now

If you don't have a Virus Definition File date of 2/19/2006 or a more recent date
Installing Program version 10 doesn't install the newest virus definitions.
Upon finishing installation of Symantec version 10, restart your computer and run live update.
You must open Symantec to run LiveUpdate. Double click the shield next to the clock.

If version 10 does not display the shield next to the clock, you will have to select START, Programs, Symantec Client Security, Symantec AntiVirus, to click LiveUpdate...
