Each student should have a copy of “Secrets of Ancient Navigators”

 

 

Step-by-step instructions for completing the activity:

1. Get online, print the “Secrets of Ancient Navigators” from the PBS website on The Search for Longitude.  The web address is www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/longitude, click on the link “Secrets of Ancient Navigators.

2. Make enough copies of the article for your entire class. 

 

3. Either have students work in groups or individually to read the article. 

 

4. Show students the video “The Search for Longitude” (if the activity is being split into two days, have students view video on second day and proceed to step five on day one)

 

5. Have students answer a set of questions about the article and video. (ie, what are longitude and latitude, how are they important to sea travel, what kept sailors from knowing longitude at sea, how did John Harrison solve the longitude problem, etc.)
